Building Pathways to Success with JobTrain at the WERC

When it comes to advancing social and economic well-being, few organizations have the history and impact of JobTrain, a nonprofit career training institution that has been transforming lives since 1965. Now, this legacy of empowerment is expanding through a partnership with Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) to bring JobTrain’s services to Oakland’s Wellness Empowerment and Resiliency Campus (WERC).

This collaboration is pivotal in addressing systemic inequities and empowering underserved communities. By providing job training programs at the WERC, JobTrain and BOSS are creating a one-stop hub where individuals can access essential resources, from mental health services to career readiness, all under one roof.

Expanding Training Resources Through Partnerships

The need for vocational training and workforce development in communities like Oakland has never been more urgent. Systemic barriers, unemployment, and economic instability continue to impact low-income individuals, particularly those from marginalized communities disproportionately.

"Career readiness is about learning a trade, it’s about building confidence, resilience, and hope. By partnering with JobTrain, we’re ensuring that students have the tools they need to thrive, not just survive, in today’s competitive job market—Donald Frazier, CEO of BOSS

JobTrain implemented a Property Management Certification at WERC along with a robust collaboration of partners in Oakland. Additionally, their off-site certification programs include healthcare training, construction skills and information technology certifications, equipping participants with the technical expertise and essential soft skills needed to secure meaningful employment.

JobTrain’s partnership with BOSS signals a growing recognition of Oakland’s potential as a hub for vocational training and social impact. With the WERC serving as a model for holistic community support, there is hope that JobTrain will establish a permanent presence in the city, amplifying its ability to serve those in need.

We see Oakland as a city of resilience and opportunity. Partnerships like this allows us to extend our mission to a community where the demand for these resources is immense. Together, we can help individuals rewrite their stories and achieve economic self-sufficiency—Donald Frazier, CEO of BOSS.

The partnership between JobTrain and BOSS exemplifies how collaboration can drive meaningful change. By offering tailored job training at the WERC, this initiative addresses employment needs and fosters a sense of community and stability.

A Vision for the Future

From mentorship programs to career placement services, participants are empowered to envision and work toward brighter futures.

For Oakland residents, the presence of JobTrain at the WERC is an opportunity—it’s a lifeline. As the partnership grows, so does the potential to create lasting change by reducing unemployment, increasing economic mobility, and inspiring generational impact.

Supporting these programs, community members and stakeholders can play a pivotal role in reshaping Oakland’s workforce landscape.
