Why We Must Act Now: Protecting the Federal Budget That Powers Our Communities

At BOSS Bay Area, we know that real change doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it’s built through relationships, solidarity, and action. One of our longest-standing partners in this work is United Way Bay Area (UWBA). UWBA has been a critical ally in our fight to disrupt poverty and houselessness for years. Their support helped BOSS open its first administrative office decades ago, and individual UWBA donations have supported multiple programs. Most recently UWBA has supported BOSS housing justice programs–housing placements, rental assistance, and advocacy for fair housing policy. But right now, everything we’ve built together is at risk.

Congress is deep in budget reconciliation negotiations, and proposals on the table could drastically slash funding for the very programs that sustain families and communities. UWBA is sounding the alarm—and we’re standing with them. These proposed cuts threaten:

  • Medicaid and SNAP, which provide critical health and food support for our unhoused and low-income neighbors.

  • The Child Tax Credit puts money back into the hands of families who need it most.

  • Charitable giving incentives that nonprofits like BOSS rely on to fund programs and services.

  • The nonprofit tax-exempt status allows us to operate independently and effectively.

This isn't just about policy. It’s about the people in our Wood Street Community Cabins who are rebuilding their lives. It’s about the men and women in Step Up Housing taking their first steps toward independence and self-determination. We cannot afford silence. We need action.

Take Action with Us Today

UWBA has made it easy to contact Congress with just a few clicks. Please take a moment today to send a letter and defend the programs our communities rely on:

Every voice matters. Every letter counts. Let’s show up for our communities, just like they’ve shown up for each other time and again.
