Step Up Is Leasing Up! A New Chapter in Dignified, Supportive Housing

Updated: May 13

We’ve seen firsthand what it means when someone finally has a key in their hand—a space to call home, a door that opens to healing, stability, and hope. That’s why the upcoming grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Step Up Housing Program is a milestone and a promise delivered.

Located in Berkeley, Step Up will offer 39 new units of permanent, supportive housing to individuals exiting homelessness and navigating the complex barriers that come with poverty, trauma, and displacement. With on-site services like case management, peer support, and wellness resources, Step Up is designed for sustained housing retention and long-term well-being.

This project began with a groundbreaking filled with intention. Our partners at Panoramic Interests, the City of Berkeley, community leaders, and service providers stood with us, recognizing the urgent need for innovation in housing.

In the Bay Area, over 30,000 people experience homelessness on any given night. Of those, thousands remain unhoused despite available resources due to lack of supportive infrastructure. Step Up fills a critical gap.

BOSS has been doing this work since 1971. We’ve expanded from shelter services to a full spectrum of trauma-informed care: housing, reentry support, behavioral health, and economic empowerment. Step Up is a continuation of that legacy—a forward-thinking development made possible through public-private partnerships, vision, and a shared commitment to community care.

What we’re building at Step Up is a place where residents can access opportunity, engage in healing, and participate fully in the life of their community. Housing like this reaffirms that every person’s humanity is worth investing in.

We invite you to the grand opening of Step Up Housing on June 13, 2025. Come help us celebrate what happens when we turn blueprints into belonging.

And in these times—as the housing crisis deepens, as funding landscapes shift, and as more of our neighbors face uncertainty—there is no better moment to support the people and initiatives BOSS serves every single day.
