Berkeley opens 39 units of supportive housing for formerly homeless residents

A long-delayed supportive housing project is opening its doors to 39 formerly homeless residents, each of whom will move into a private studio.

Affordable housing is so essential in our community. We’re really grateful to have BOSS, who’s working on this project, to make sure that our unhoused neighbors find some homes, and making sure that they stay in those homes, we don’t want people ending up back on the streets. Located at 1367 University Ave., near Target and Strawberry Creek Park, the three-story building, called Step Up Housing, features roughly 200-square-foot units with kitchenettes and bathrooms, a secured entrance, wraparound balconies, a community kitchen and a shared courtyard for events and programming.

Staff will be on-site 24/7 to offer case management, job navigation, mental health and addiction recovery support, and help reconnect people with medical care and benefits.
