Sponsor Arc of Liberation Commemoration | 2026 | Oakland
This August, BOSS will host the Black August: Arc of Liberation Commemoration in Oakland — a community gathering rooted in study, remembrance, art, and collective power.

Black August was established in 1979 to honor freedom fighters, political prisoners, and those who gave their lives in the struggle for Black liberation. It is a tradition grounded in discipline, unity, education, and resistance. The Arc of Liberation Commemoration carries that tradition forward.

Each year, artists, educators, Elders, youth, organizers, and families gather to honor the legacy of George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, Khatari Gaulden, the San Quentin Six, and others whose resistance shaped generations. The day centers remembrance while strengthening community in the present.
The Arc of Liberation Commemoration provides:

• Live performances and cultural expression rooted in resistance
• Political education workshops and community dialogue
• The Black Market featuring Black-owned vendors and entrepreneurs
• Intergenerational spaces for study, reflection, and organizing
• Public recognition of those still incarcerated and impacted by the system

This event is free and open to the community. It creates space for history to be studied, culture to be uplifted, and economic opportunity to circulate locally. When art, education, and entrepreneurship meet in one space, collective power grows. That is the purpose.
