
Derrick H. Muhammad
Derrick Muhammad is a native of Oakland, California, and a proud graduate of Fremont High School. He has devoted his career to uplifting his community through advocacy and civic engagement.

For more than 20 years, Derrick has been a member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), where he served in key leadership roles such as Business Agent and Secretary-Treasurer. In these capacities, he negotiated labor agreements, fought for equitable working conditions, and promoted safety initiatives that empowered workers and their families.

Derrick holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Davis. He leverages his knowledge to support initiatives that promote fair employment practices, access to job training, and long-term economic sustainability, particularly for underrepresented communities in Alameda County.
​
A passionate advocate for equity and opportunity, Derrick Muhammad continues to contribute to public service by supporting organizations and commissions that strengthen local economies and create inclusive pathways to employment.
He currently serves on the board of the Oakland Port Board of Commissioners and Youth Uprising.
