What we do
Mission and core values
At BOSS our mission is simple:
We help homeless, poor, and disabled people achieve health and self-sufficiency, while fighting against the root causes of poverty and homelessness.
Our core values are also simple and direct:
We believe that access to housing, employment, and good health are basic human rights. We believe that people also have the right—and the responsibility—to stand up and demand changes policies which restrict or deny those rights.
In order to be most effective, we strive every day for excellence in behavior and ethics, excellence in service delivery, excellence in systems, and excellence in leadership.
Who do we help?
We work in Alameda County, California with the people who need us most; not only the adults who face homelessness but the many children who are also caught up in desperate family circumstances. Many are trying to cope with homelessness while also struggling with mental illness, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, or poor physical health. Our goal is to work in a holistic way, supporting our clients at every stage as they rebuild their lives and create healthy and bright futures for their families. Success can mean full self-sufficiency—a home, a job, healthy kids doing well in school—or smaller steps towards a better life. We celebrate people’s strength in surviving under difficult conditions.
Our Approach
Our approach is rooted in four key strategies which reflect our core beliefs and allow us to efficiently target our programs:
