boona cheema was the Executive Director of BOSS from 1978 to 2013. Born in India, boona received economics and journalism degrees before going to Vietnam to volunteer with war-wounded children. When she arrived in the U.S. she received services from the (then-called) Hillel Streetwork Project, went to work for the organization, and led its growth for over three decades.
boona is an award-winning social justice educator and activist whose lifelong passion for human rights and community and economic development led her to work with dozens of local, state, national, and international organizations over the years including Seva Foundation, Global Exchange, Oxfam America, Food First, Encampment for Citizenship, Siren Project, and many others.
boona received awards for her work with the homeless and poor from San Francisco Foundation, Women’s Political Caucus, President Bush Points of Light, Alameda County, City of Berkeley, and many others.
